$HIREDOG · The Legend

Every dog has its day.

This one had to apply for it.

The Lobby

In the gray city of Payroll, where the towers hummed with fax machines and nobody ever looked up, a scruffy pup slept outside the revolving doors of the biggest hiring office in the land.

Every morning the suits stepped over him on their way in. Every morning he wagged anyway. He didn't have a name, a home, or a résumé. He had a feeling that one day, the doors would open for him too.

II

Ninety-Nine Rejections

So he applied. For everything. Every answer came back the same way: a crisp envelope, a polite no.

Mail Carrier“CONFLICT OF INTEREST”
Night Security“TOO FRIENDLY”
Junior Fetch Analyst“REQUIRES 7 YRS EXPERIENCE”
Rejection #99“NO PAWS.”

He was two years old. He kept every letter anyway and stacked them into a bed. It was the warmest thing he owned.

III

Lost & Found

One rainy night, the office's lost-and-found box blew over in the wind. Out tumbled two things nobody had ever come back for: a pair of black sunglasses and a bright red tie.

He put on both. He looked down into a puddle and, for the first time, didn't see a stray. He saw a candidate.

IV

The Hire Coin

Beneath the floorboards of the old hiring hall, the oldest building in Payroll, he dug until his paws were sore. And there it was: a heavy gold coin, stamped with a single letter. H.

The old-timers whispered about it. The Hire coin, struck long ago by the first guild of workers, who swore an oath that anyone who showed up ready would never be turned away.

He carried it in his teeth to the revolving doors. For the first time, they didn't spin him back out.

V

The Pack

But he didn't take the job and forget the lobby. He walked back out to the others still waiting there: the overqualified, the underqualified, the ones told “we'll keep your résumé on file.”

He shared the coin's luck with every one of them. One coin became many paws. That night, the strays stopped being strays. They became the Pack, and the Pack named him HireDog.

VI

The Final Interview

Legend says there is one last interview, the one that decides everything. Nobody knows who's asking the questions. They only know where it is.

The moon. The Pack is already practicing their handshake.

The Pack Oath

Nobody gets left in the lobby.
